Hi everyone, Due to finances and weight loss I'm looking at buying a wedding dress off the peg around July (I get married 26/9/15) but I was wondering about alterations...do the dress shops do this or would I need to find a seamstress and how long do alterations take?
Thank you

The dress shop should be able to do them especially if you buy it from there. Mine did but mine was not off the peg.

Most shops have their own in-house seamstress, although you don't have to use them. You can take your dress away and use whoever you like. Not sure how long it takes as not bought my dress yet, but I guess it depends on how much needs doing. I'd say just to take it in a bit should take no more than a couple of weeks? x

I did not have mine done until about 4 weeks before. My last fitting was done 2 weeks before.

I've bought my dress from off the peg as it was my dream dress and fit me perfectly at the time :D I also got the dress for £1100 down from £1300 and was lucky that it had only arrived in the shop about 2 weeks beforehand and no one else had tried it on :D However I've since had a baby who is now 13months old and am currently 32 weeks pregnant with no4 lol! Luckily I've lost weight from both pregnancies so the dress will need to be taken in a little bit which IMHO is better than being taken out! The bridal shop I've bought it from have their own in-house seamstress to do the alterations and they have told me it will cost no more than £150 depending on what needs doing.

I bought mine from an outlet store so they didn't have anyone linked to them and it was from another town nearby. I was going to try and ask a few local bridal stores if they would do the alterations for me, but the first one I went to said they would and didn't need to try anywhere else. I'm going to ring them next week to organise fittings! They also quoted up to £150

Mine said it could be about £60 (I think) up to £150, so said if you budget for 150 then any less is a bonus

My alterations were £80 and she apologised for that saying it was a lot. She took it in around the bust a little and a bit on the hem, that was the expensive part as it was the lace part of my dress,

I bought my dress off the peg, I was also lucky that it fit me perfectly & was my dream dress.
However, I have had 1 child & lost weight since then, but I also had 2 operations on my back which has caused it to change shape so my dress needed altering.
It cost £95 to have the dress taken out at the side seams, the zip removed completely (it used to have a zip & lace up back), they used the detachable straps to extend the laced back so it is now completely lace up, they also had to re-bead the dress to account for having taken it out.
The only reason they took it out was due to the change in shape of my back as if they had just changed it to lace up it wouldnt have laced up properly & the laced back would be the shape of an hour glass rather than a V. The amount of work they did was quite alot however it only took them a week to do it. The dress still looks amazing. At the same time they also had to replace the modesty panel to compensate for the change.
This was an outside seamstress recommended by the shop I bought my dress from.

Mine was a sale dress off the peg, and the in house seamstress's husband was really rude to me so I sorted everything myself in the end but they should have one for you to use x

Donna I have an ongoing issue for the last 14yrs - the ops made my back worse :(
But yes I feel it was a great price for the amount of work!
