So I have been trying to phone the registrar for a couple of days now to book our date in with them. Our venue recommends that we book it at the same time we book the venue. The deposit was sent off yesterday for the venue and just waiting for two members from our wedding party to sign the booking form before we send that off as well. I phoned the registrar's office yesterday at least 10 times and finally gave up, leaving a message with my number for them to phone me back at about 10 o'clock. I tried a couple of times after that to get through to no avail and I did not receive a phone call back from them. I phoned straight away this morning as soon as they opened and they wouldn't pick up. after the sixth time of phoning they were apparently on the phone to another customer. My blood is really starting to boil at this point because I still cannot get through to them! Am I just being impatient? I really need this booked before I can relax and start organising other things! Has anybody else had this problem? It seems like every time I get through they are busy with other customers.

I had trouble getting through to ours as well. I kept phoning for about 3 days and had no answer. When they didn't answer, it switched through to customer services who would take a message and pass onto them for them to phone me back. I was a bit wary about doing this at first because I would have liked to just speak to them myself instead of leaving it in someone else's hands, but eventually I admitted defeat and left a message for a call back. They called me back the next day :)

Our venue wouldn't let us actually book until we had booked the registrar. We had provisionally booked a date which they were happy to hold for 3 weeks but they wouldn't accept a deposit until we had the registrar arranged x

See, our venue said that we don't have to but it is advised because I mentioned about a couple of people (off this site) who had said that depending on the area, the registrar won't let them book until closer to the time but I just guessed that as they had given me a specific number to phone and were aware of the time gap that it would be OK. I hope they phone me back today at some point then if that was the case for you. It just riles me up that I phone and phone and they are "open but unable to get to the phone" and then the second after when I phone back again they are "busy with another customer". How on earth did that other customer get in there before me?! I really hope it isn't like this for other aspects of the wedding as well! x

Yeah it really frustrated me as well. What's the point of even having a phone number if they're not going to answer the phone. Surely they should have someone, or a few people, just dedicated to answering the phone and taking bookings? Fingers crossed you hear back from them soon x

I still didn't get through yesterday. If I got put on hold and transferred like that after the carry on I have had trying to get through I would definitely be complaining! *SIGH* they are not open today! I think I would definitely be complaining. Worst thing is they say in their message "we value your custom"... They clearly don't! And Teresa, they just didn't want your money, you should have kept it haha x

Just the £35 booking fee at this stage. Then when we have our appointment to give notice we need to pay another £35 each, then pay the remaining balance no later than 6 weeks before the wedding day. Also £4 per wedding certificate x

Fairly standard I think! The balance left to pay for us will be £405 I think - although that's likely to go up a little between now and then and that is for a Saturday.

I think you normally have 2 - one for each of you as they have your own names on I believe. But you can request as many copies as you like x

Ahh well that isn't too bad then. I just paid off our deposit on Monday so I don't know if that comes out of the total amount left to pay or whether that is on top of it. My bank balance is sad now though! I am hoping that I can just set up a direct debit or something and get a certain amount transferred to the venue each month or so. I am going back to see the venue on 7th September to show my parents around (I think my dad is secretly more into this than he is letting on! He seems so proud bless him, especially the fact that we are going for a fairly big wedding), so I may be able to ask them about it then and just see what they normally do in regards to it. Ideally I don't want to be paying massive chunks off every now and then as it would make it harder I think, whereas if we just treat it like any other bill that we have we will be able to work things out even better. My nana just bought us a wedding fund pot, one of those ones where you have to smash it open to get the money out. I think it is actually helping! xx

I'm not sure actually, everywhere is probably different. Ours was described as a 'booking fee' so sounds like that is actually on top of everything else, but if they've referred to it as a deposit that indicates to me it would come off your final balance?

Yeah that's a good idea. I'm sure they will be open to that idea; either way they are still getting paid so it shouldn't make much of a difference to them :) I loved showing our parents around our venue, it was amazing having them all involved and sharing it together! My dad is really excited about our wedding as well and he seems so proud - he keeps saying he wants to book his room for the night of the wedding now even though it is like 22 months away haha.

h2b has a huge plastic St3lla bottle that he puts all of his tips into and I put my spare change in there as well. It's amazing how fast it adds up, definitely worth it! x

Haha, my dad said a similar thing to us. He said he would never be late for our wedding, he is never late for anything but he said because of my mum who is always late he would be booking the room out before the wedding so he would be there ready for it. Our wedding is on a Tuesday though so he won't be able to do that but he will have my mum up at the crack of dawn if he has to haha.

I put all of our spare change in as well. I had my daughter help me yesterday put some coins in. She loved it. She was so pleased when they were all in she started clapping her hands bless her! xx

I sent an email to our venue to let them know that I was having an impossible time trying to get in touch with them and they were like oh don't worry about it, if you have left a message I am sure they will get back to you.

    Hi,

is it Stockton as I found this on their website:

"Giving notice means making a legal declaration that you are both free to marry each other and will require you to provide certain documents and pay a statutory fee. You may do this up to one year before the date of the ceremony and it must be done in person. If you are getting married at the Register Office, in an 'approved premise' or another religious building (except Church of England) you should give your notice of marriage within 12 months of the date of the wedding."

This is the same in Durham and North Tyneside in that they only let you give notice up to a year ahead of your wedding so you might not be able to do so yet anyway and you are getting all worked up :(

    xx

You may need to wait the 12 months I'm afraid as when I booked in with our cathedral we were about 13 months before wedding and the priest advised some places allow notice and bookings up to 18 months before so I rang up and they said nope 12 months or under x

Because it's quite a way away, they might not be making you top priority atm; as it's wedding season it could be that they're tied up with weddings etc. They also may not allow you to book this far out; we had a huge battle with our registry office over booking in advance (I did not get why they couldn't pencil us in for the date and time slot, stupid rule IMO; anyway, after a bit of arguing they agreed provided we pay upfront, which was fine). So, bear that in mind.

I'd probably send them an email explaining what the venue told you (ie to call and book as soon as you booked the venue), and giving details of the venue/wedding date etc, and explain that you can't get through on the phone and then give it a few days and see if you get a reply.

They had apparently tried to contact me today but couldn't get through (because my phone had ran out of battery). How very typical. The one time my phone runs out of battery and they finally decide to get in touch with me! I sent a reply explaining the situation and that it shouldn't happen again and that I look forward to hearing from them again. I.e. Melanie: we wer Reading and they had the same stupid policy (plus only 3 time slots, with two of each; so, if two other couples had pipped us to the post we would have lost the time we wanted (1pm; the others were too late) and would probably have had to book elsewhere. We thought it was utterly ridiculous and after a lot of back and forth they agreed to let us book provided we pay up front (which was fine by us). But yeah, crazy!
