Wedding cake searching is driving us nuts.... We are in a reasonably isolated part of the country (Devon) and where I am you have to travel a good 20-30 miles to find suppliers making arranging appointments difficult as it is but the ones close enough just aren't hitting the spot. We need someone Exeter based or close by and anyone Cornwall direction rather than London direction is going to be too far to travel for tastings etc but if we go London direction, then they charge the earth for delivery costs.... Anyone got any suggestions???? Any recommendations or suggestions please would be so gratefully received!!

Have you tried independent ladies rather than shops? I found loads on book of face and they are really reasonable in price etc.
I found mine there and still went for tasting etc. 3 tiers in different flavours and a personalised topper £295. Including delivery and set up about 15 miles from her house.

Thanks Mrs C, we will look into that!

And thank you so much for the link Katie.. I remember looking at her last night but didn't contact her as I agree with you, I didn't think they were that good and didn't wow me! I really appreciate you asking your friends though :) xx

It was no problem :) . They didn't wow me either and you definitely have to have a feeling of wow with a wedding cake. xx

Oh yes definitely, we've found about 7 people about cakes but apart from 2 of them, none of the rest really 'wow' us... I guess that's the problem with me as I make my own cakes and expect a certain 'something' from it! xx

I do a lot of baking too which is why I think I'll end up making my own cake as I know then I will be happy with it. Do you have any family members or friends who bake that could help out? Or have you seen the 'naked' wedding cakes? They look relatively simple to DIY if you fancied doing that instead? Sorry I'm not much help

There is loads of inspiration on Google images, we are having a cupcake wedding cake. Myself and my friend who is a baker is doing ors. We had loads of fun baking and trying different recipes, I decided on blueberry cupcakes with a hint of lemon for the topping and the small cake on top will be chocolate.
Give it ago, then you will be able to decide from there if you wanna bake it or get a 3rd party in and if all fails at least you will have had fun and a chance to eat lots of cake hehe

Have you thought of an alternative? I know someone who had a "bake-off" with their fiance. They both baked a few sponge cakes, and they had a big sign made "Katie & Andrew's Bake Off!". It looked great, and was a good alternative to buying a cake

Im making my own wedding cake, its a tough decision, i also make cakes for friends and family and have only made a few wedding cakes, its a tricky business as it needs to be seamless, im happy making my own though as i know it will be exactly what i want, i still dont know what it is i want as yet apart from different flavours, i too live in Devon and if i was choosing someone to make my cake other than me, i would find it hard. good luck hope you find someone to make your perfect cake xx

Thanks guys - we actually do have an appointment with M. Cakes already to see them in about 10 days but we are unsure whether we are going to go now as last night we had a re-evaluate of all the ones we spoke to and weren't that impressed with them tbh. What are they like in person; nice people, good cake? Convince me lol.
I kind of wish I was doing my own cake but everyone is saying it will be very stressful in the run up and I will want to enjoy it rather than worry about cake but I am lamenting the loss of my own cake haha..
Hmmmm, bake off... Not heard of that! I think P1nterest might be getting a visitor tonight!!

What about freezing your cake before hand and then you wouldn't have as much stress about baking and decorating? I want to make my own wedding cake but think I will likely do this as it doesn't at all affect the flavour if the cake is really well wrapped and I'll go for something simple decoration wise on ours to make life a bit easier for myself. Cake in a cool place when iced with fondant is still moist and fresh for around a week so it could be something you might be able to squeeze in if you really weren't comfortable with any other cake makers you find. I'm not local to your area so I unfortunately don't have any other suggestions or recommendations :(
