For our evening reception when we'll be cutting the cake we will have approx 100 guests if which 16 will be children under 10. I'm making our wedding cake but am unsure of the tier sizes to do. The bottom layer will be fruit and the middle and top sponge.

    I was thinking 6, 8, 10 inches.

    What have other people had??

We've got double the number of guests, so have had to go for five tiers. The sizes were dictated by the cake stand that we found, so they're 16, 14, 12, 10, 8 inches. We'll probably have some left over, but not too much. If you google number of servings in a cake you can find tables which show you an estimate for how many servings you would get from different sizes, and also the difference between fruit and sponge and between square and round. You get more servings from a fruit cake than a sponge, and more from square than round.

We have 70-90 guests expected and we are having a 6, 8 and 10 inch cake which are quite deep at 4 inches deep, ours will all be lemon sponge with lemon curd and lemon buttercream with fresh blueberries mixed in, sounds an odd choice but is to die for and goes with our lemon and ivory colour theme, I'm not sure I want to share it :-D xx

Cheers ladies. Decided to go with the 6,8,10 as we don't want to be left with cake after the reception.

Our actual cake is going to be 3 tiers however we want it to LOOK bigger so we have spoken to our cake maker and asked for the top 2 additional layers (to make 5 tiers) to be polystyrene. I don't know if anyone has seen this done but essentially the polystyrene is shaped into what the sponge would be and then covered in the fondant icing.

I've seen some celebs do it so 90% of their cake is polystyrene but the base is a sponge for a "cutting cake"

    we are having 5 tiers - 10" 8" 6" 4" and a 2" turret .

we asked about the bottom tier being polystyrene but as it would still cost the same we decided to have a fruit one instead and then this is going to be used for a party we are having 2 weeks after the wedding.
