I am a size 19/20, having put on two dress sizes in two years, and am dreading dress shopping. I hate going regular shopping most of the time as I can't find anything nice that fits me. I am trying to lose weight by eating as healthily as I usually do and I am starting to exercise more (I HATE exercise as I never seem to lose anything more than a pound or two so I give up usually), but I am terrified I am going to go into a bridal shop and end up leaving in tears because I can't find anything in my size. I have a Berketex(sp?) near to me and I do go in and have a look at the sample dresses they have, but most are only sizes 10-14. Can any of you lovely ladies give me some advice to motivate me?

    Steph

    Hi Steph- I hate exercise!!!
Bought a certain dancing "just" game for the wii Xmas 2012 and started watching what I eat - during the week 1500 cals a day and have whatever within reason at weekend. I did 30 mins dance as often as I could for the first year and now I alternate with a 15 min jog when I watch tv. I lost 3.5 stone and went from a 16/18 to 12/14.
I don't eat veg or salad so I've found it tough!!

Thanks Becky, and it's Steph :p

I am so glad I am not the only one, MrsCross2Be! I would happily do something like that but unfortunately I live in a shared house and my housemates aren't that nice. I literally have a room and I can use the kitchen and bathroom, so until I move out something like the wii is out the picture. I was thinking about zumba and stuff but I can't really afford to :/

    Why do you hate exercise?

See the weight loss thread... its currently active... I've just posted loads of advice on there... have you tried the website my f1tness p@l ?? they have an app too... (i changed some letters to prevent advertising)

Its free and great for weight loss. Ultimately, for you to maintain or gain that size, you must be over eatig. If you do not like exercise, which is fair enough, you'll need to eat less calorie dense foods and consume less calories than your body uses. You can eat healthy food and still eat too much... oils for example have 120 calories or thereabouts per tablespoon ~(15ml level tablespoon!) and an average woman's daily intake should be around 2000 calories. A slice of bread containts around 120 calories...some up to 150calories. Butter, is about 70 calories PER TEASPOON! and most people serve themselves an extra large portion of meat/ protein. Portion size can be guided using your own hand which is tailored to you! a cupped hand for your carb portion, a protein portion the size of your palm or a deck of cards(around 100-125g) and veg, can be pretty much unlimited so long as they've not been dressed with other things like fats and oils.

Ultimately though, exercise combined with some form of calorie restriction is whats going to make you lose weight. Brisk walking for 30-45 mins per day counts and is good for your heart health, muscle tone etc etc... and if getting in to a wedding dress of your choice isn't motivation enough... think of what it's doing to your health and confidence?

The secrets of skinny girls are: moderation, and understanding of whats going in vs whats going out, making sensible balanced choices and not depriving themselves but exercising moderation when it comes to treats, exercising moderately.

It's easy to gain weight, and hard to lose it, but if you change your lifestyle now, you'd be starting off married life much healthier and happier too.

i found it easier to do smaller portions sizes of that i like rather than denying myself them, try slimming word I lost over a stone by just dieting, but could not get past a certain number but with just a little bit of excercise have managed it. In january when the car will be paid off going to join my local gym as i don't generaly hate excercise, but i hate outside! lols expesh in winter.

Outside is great exercise or even in the home... cos its free!

After a while you get beyond the weather bothering you... I personally used to depsies exercise, then I ballooned to a size 14 so knew I had to do something about it so I joined a gym and looked online for advice and info... then i came across the aforementioned site/app. My life hasn't been the same since! Plus I've gotten really good at running... My money goes on new trainers, new sports kit (mostly from sp0rts direct and tk m@xx for the jazzy tecnical stuff!) and race entries ... but just started going to boot camp which costs me £4 / session and is totally worth it. The more I progress, the more I want the gucci kit!

My mate at work had a baby and put loads of weight on but started h3rb@l1fe and the couch to 5km program and then couch to 10km programme, shes lost nearly 2 stone in 2 months and completed the salford 10km in less than 1 hour yesterday which is incredibel for her!

My fitness has increased massively as has my health (my Resting heart rate is 45 BPM on average now!), my skin is great, I hardly see any cellulite (all women have some!) on me and I generally feel "good"!

Basically, with weight loss, you gotta want it. I used to put Maxitone posters and things in my room to wake up to and remind me of the goals i have!

I lost weight with my GP. I was referred to a dietician and got a 1500 calorie eating plan which was really effective. If your BMI (body mass index) is over 30 they will definitely help you. If it's over 28 and you have health problems resulting from your weight they will also help you. Otherwise it's still worth asking for advice. 20-25 is considered a healthy BMI. To work out your BMI you need your weight in kilos and height in centimeters. You divide the weight by the square of your height.

i agree with valentina - the fitness pal site is good - i use the iphone app which is quite handy when on the move. healthy weight loss is about 1.5 to 2 pounds a week if you are going to keep the weight off in the long term so if you are doing that then keep it up - much better for you in the long term. at first you will probably lose more but it should even out afterwards. the thing that kicked me into losing my weight was seeing a really horrible picture of myself where i was 3.5 stone heavier than i am now - if you have a picture like this then try stick it on the fridge for some extra motivation x

I will add you now Valentina ^.^

I have an appointment with my GP for something different at the end of the month but I will deffo talk to her about it as I know my BMI is over 25, not 100% sure though. I'm not even sure of my actual weight, I'm just guestimating from what it was last time.

It said that I should lost around 2 poundish a week so fingers crossed! I'm gonna start walking more and I am actually going to sign up to the gym after talking to my H2B last night. He said he will stand by whatever decisions I make <3 Gotta love him lol.

Ok so you have 14 months which is plenty of time when was you planning on going dress shopping? Usually people wait 9 months before if you have to order in but I couldn't wait that long try not to think of loosing weight as a diet' try to think of it as a lifestyle change! You don't have to do any drastic exercise try starting to add veg and fruit a bit more into your daily intake restrict take always if you eat any? Swap fuzzy drinks for sugar free ones this u found hard at first but I do regularly treat myself to a sugar coke :) have you thought about Zumba? You can get the DVD and do it at home x

It is a better way to look at it as the whole idea of a diet makes me sad lol. I don't know when I will start looking yet, I need to has pennies :( But I said I wouldn't start looking until I had lost a little bit of weight. I have stopped drinking, as I dont really enjoy it anymore, and am drinking squash instead of fizzy drinks now and I am deffo adding lots of fruit and veg to my diet. With the Zumba dvd, it's the same problem with the wii. I don't have the space and my housemates are less then nice.

I'm so pleased you added me MrsHouseToBe! Really will try my best to support you!

You'll find MFP is one of the best ways to go about losing weight as a) it's free, b)its based on common and easy science/biology, c)it encourages an overall healthier lifestyle, d) it's easy to do and e) does not require any special equipment or foods!

You have time on your side... I reccomend that you don't weigh yourself every day, but maybe once every 2 weeks, same day, same time ( go for just after youve been to the loo first thing in the morning) and track your tape measurements instead because that's what counts at least for you at this moment and changes in diet can make you hold on to more water, and healthier foods like fruit and veg have a high water content compared to drier foods like biscuits. This should help keep you motivated!

The gym is a great place to go... never feel intimidated by anyone there... some of them will have been in your position before, those that aren't may be surprised (not always) to see larger people there but most of them are thinking "good on you" and may even offer you help and advice (take with a pinch of salt!). use the Gym Instructors for advice where possible. Gr0up0n have an offer for L@ F1TN3SS at the mo if you wanna just try a gym out for not much (£19 for 10 passes that can be used within 6 weeks of issue)

MFP has been the most successful, least costly and least traumatic weight loss and maintenace "programme" for me and I can't advocate it enough!!!

I even got H2B on it and people I work out with use it... One guy lost his wife to a pulmonary embolism... as a result of health problems caused by being morbidly obese. He himself was very overweight and after she passed, has decided to get himself back in to shape. He started off by watching how much he ate... he still had chips and cake, just less and made sure it was within his calorie "allowance". Once the weight started coming off, he decided to come to boot camp which is what I go to, to improve his fitness and meet people, and boost the loss. He's doing so well. You can lose weight from cutting a few calories here and there, snacking less, and just choosing better options/ smaller portions. I switched from semi skimmed milk to almond milk which spares you about 40 calories per 200ml! so every day a week adds up to 280 calories saved a week! I know I'm talking minor examples, but it really does add up and you can still have things you would normally by just tweaking them!

You're gonna learn so much using MFP... it will make you change the way you think!

I am already loving it, it's brilliant and everyone is so supportive.

I am going to rejoin the gym near me as soon as I have the money to as I have all the time in the world to go there. I think this time I need to stop being so paranoid and self concious and remember that I have a good reason for going this time.

That's amazing about your friend, though I am sorry for his loss. I am going to look into things like boot camp etc. and I am already snacking less. I was shocked by how much sugar and things certain things have in them. I have made sure the H2B knows we won't be getting anymore snacky things unless they are healthy and he is happy to eat what I eat meal wise so it'll be nice having him do it with me, even if it is just the food side of everything.

I was using my fitness pal but I am a person that needs to go to a group to get weighed. Where support is there and we are all in the same boat. I joined s.world two weeks ago and have lost 7 pound in those two weeks. If you lose half a pound it's half a pound in the right direction. Keep up with healthy eating. Cut out pastry , bread and dairy products. What ever you have for dinner make sure you have at least half being veg or salad. Eat naughty food in moderation.

I also use MFP to log my food. I eat between 1450-1600 calories through the week and have a higher calorie day at the weekend of around 1800-2000 calories. For me the key has been to look at it as a lifestyle change rather than a 'diet'. I cook mostly from scratch and keep it flavoursome by using herbs and spices and try not to restrict myself too much. I have my main meal of the day at lunchtime though as I'm most likely to snack in the afternoon so this stops me from from doing that and then I have something light in the evening. If I fancy a treat then I will have it but try to make better choices so if it's crisps I have Walkers Hoops and Crosses at 80 calories a bag rather than McCoys at 260 or a Curly Wurly instead of a Dairy Milk. At night I usually have a frozen jubbly at 16 calories as this is enough to satisfy my sweet craving. Be realistic about your weight loss goals: 1-2lbs is a healthy weight loss average per week. As much as you want it to, it's not going to come off overnight and slow and steady is the best way forward. The body is a weird and wonderful thing so don't be too disappointed if you don't lose one week as sometimes that happens for no apparent reason.

DO NOT CUT OUT BREAD, PASTRY AND DAIRY!

For a start, low fat dairy like skimmed milk and low fat cottage cheese are great weighs to lose fat weight... the calcium helps with cellular level metabolism of fat... in addition, dairy, eggs and meat contain CLA, a derivative of omega 6 which helps your body use fat as an energy source. This is particularly good when you get to the higher end of the normal BMI range to help reduce body fat. Also, you need carbs like bread (i reccomend wholemeal and wheatgerm) to fuel your body and brain! Just again, eat in moderation... exceptions are if you're looking for uber competitive athletic gains, theres some evidence that a gluten free diet can optimise athletic performance, but unless you have a gluten allergy you do not need to worry about this.

Pastry- again, eaten in moderation and with its calorie content in mind, doesn't have to be eliminated, yes eat it less often and not as much portion wise, but as I said, the beauty with MFP is that you can eat most things so long as you don't over eat!

There is a huge misunderstanding of what you can and can't eat and education on nutrition, especially with women. Portion size accounts for why most women are overweight in the UK... and a lot of women go and exercise, think they've earned a treat and then eat things which are more calorific than the calories they burned exercsing...so gain weight!

Other points... don't be afraid of protein. As I run and do exercise(I don't do anything extreme regularly) I AIM to eat 1g of protein per lb body weight a day. I get this from sources like 0% fat good quality greek yoghurt (not greek style... the protein content should be around8-10g/100g) as a dessert with a little honey and blueberries, lean white fish and skinless chicken/turkey breast, extra lean red meat etc. The yoghurt is great as it's got calcium in it as previously mentioned.

If eating cheese, try to go for reduced fat options and keep portion in check (30g is around 100d, about a small matchbox size and contains around 120calories!) but it does contain good things like calcium, CLA and some other good fats.#

Remember, low fat does not always mean weight loss as a lot of products will add sugar to replace the fat. In addition, people tend to eat more of it, resulting in no net benefit!

As mentioned... eat what you like, just in moderation and move a bit more (walking as mentioned is fantastic- gentle on joints and if you walk quick for about 45 mins you can get a real bead on!) Raising your pulse to at least about 130BPM is what you need to do really. Forget nonsense about fat burning zones... the harder you're working, normally by using more and the larger muscles like legs and torso, the more calories per minute you'll burn whilst exercising.

Don't be afraid of weight lifting heavy stuff in the gym. I'm about to go do deadlifts (and a myriad of other leg exercises) in the gym... because I'm trying to get slender... women don't have enough testosterone to build muscle like guys do and if you work the right weight for the right reps (about 12-15 rep sets) you'll really slender up without bulking up.

Hope all this helps!!! Many women wonder why they're overweight... its not because they're not trying, they're just either in denial about how much they eat, or doing the wrong exercise and have incorrect nutrition!

PS... i have binges every now and then do... because sometimes I get sad, or have a big celebration/event or just because I want to eat gorgeous food... but I don't do this every week or every day. I don't drink during the week ~(alcohol) and if I'm going out to get drunk, i stick to clear spirits with diet soda and dry white wine in general (sweet normally contains more sugar obvs!) But then again, i don't feel the need to get smashed anymore so often don't drink! I have no issue with telling people i don't drink either too. So most of the time I'm dry!

I'm at a dining in Night on Friday with Prince Edward and I'm Miss Vice so have to give a speech... that'll take a good glug of dutch courage and is a 3 course meal... so i'll be eating a lot then! But I intend to go for a run too to offset some "damage" - basically you can have those days, as long as you don't expect to lose weight from it AND/OR try to exercise (literally) damage control by doing some exercise to mitigate the splurge!

Hey hun, i dont know if you would be interested but try aloe vera gel drink. This is a cleanse, it's to rid your body of toxins that are making you feel the way you are, ppl feel less energetic because of what they have beeen putting in to their system. Exercise is great but once in a while you need to cleanse your system, the same way you need to clean your house.

Here is a link to the aloe vera gel drink. I am currently taking it and have seen massive improvement in my energy levels and my weight and my family are currently taking it too.

I gained 18 kilos in one year and I'm getting married in August. I'm terrified about the wedding dress shopping as I have the same feeling you're having. I started a regime a month ago and I've lost almost 4 kilos. I downloaded an app called 'My fitness pal' which helps you keep track of the calories you're getting every day. I used to think I had a healthy diet but now I know I didn't. Honestly, this app has helped me so much... and it's free! I'm aware that every body is different and that it may take you more or less time to lose weight, but just be aware of the calories we're eating helps a lot. Why don't you give it a try? X

I have lost nearly 40lbs in the last 9months 8 am on my fitness pal and normally have 1300 cal a day , I try to walk a certain amount of steps and have a Fitbit which is now linked to MFP I also have started an app c25k which is like couch to 5k and currently finishing week 5!

I still have treats so sometimes I do eat into the cals I have gained back by exercise but changed portions and also have started making meals more as in at some point we were having 3 take aways a week due to being tired from work and wanting something quick but we realised by the time we order and it delivered we would be already eating home cooked meal.now we have a 1 week treat.

I do find it hard some days as me and h2b take turns to cook and he just doesn't like stuff like salad as he says salad is the food his food eats!

Defo start looking at portions and that you are eating 3meAls a day and if you are hungry have healthy snacks ready as this can add up on the cals. Try walking places more which in this cold weather it's tempting not to.

Remember you are not alone and good luck :)

I was on Mfp but tbh even the thought of weighing my food makes me want to cry so I'd never know how much of something I was eating. It kept telling me off for "under eating" even if I actually had breakfast that day. Best advice I can give is not to think "diet" I think that word has pretty negative connotations, and just if you want to eat something crappy the. Eat it, otherwise the craving will get worse and worse and you'll end up eating about 10 chocolate bars when you originally just wanted half a bar
