Hi everyone, I've posted this to post the answer to a question we think its important to ask.
Now - that all important question, which we are asked every week at wedding shows - "when should we buy our rings?"
This is a comnplicated question because it really depends on several things: the rate of price rises in gold; your own financial situation and budget; how far ahead you are planning the wedding and a few others
Our advice at the moment - with gold going up in price almost every week - is buy as soon as you can.
Obviously this depends on your finances but some jewellers, offer interest free deals that allow you to order now, fix the price and then pay monthly with no interest charges.
Whatever you do don't leave it too late - it can take up to 8 weeks to make a ring and then you need to allow about 6 - 8 weeksto make adjustments if they are needed. The most common problem with new rings is the size and this can take 2 -3 weeks to put right.
So you need to be ordering your rings AT LEAST 3 months before the wedding. We recomend 15 - 18 months. That way you can be sure that the only thing from your wedding that you'll use every day of your married life - your ring - is bought, paid for and in your possession in plenty of time before the wedding.
I hope that helps and if you have any more questions about wedding rings or other jewellery just pop it on here and we'll answer as fast as we can.

We bought our rings around 16 months before the wedding - but it backfired a bit for us. H2b put on weight (only a bit), but we had to get his ring adjusted. Luckily it was only one size so could be stretched but if it had been any more the ring wouldn't have looked right as it's partly 'frosted' in the middle.

I wanted to order ours because we won a voucher in your 10 year compition but since changing dates were not getting married till 1st november 2015 now and the voucher runs out next month!
Do you think its worth getting them now anyway before the voucher runs out (its for £100, if it was the £10 one i would just pass it to a lady on here and wait till nearer) or should we wait till nearer the time???

well i ordered mine last yr and now i've lost weight mine doesnt fit :( boo hoo!! xx
Hi Sarah - I would order your rings now and ask for them to be delivered nearer the wedding. Then get you finger measured nearer the time. That way you should get a good fit. However smooch and some other jewelers will resize your ring free of charge. We do it anytime as part of our lifetime guarantee.
Hails - If you order your rings now you will not only save the £100 (congratulations on winning that by the way!) but you'll also probably save a lot more due to the expected increases in the gold price. If you order now and pay by direct debit on the interest free payment scheme it will only be a few pounds a month.
Other jewellers may offer similar deals
If either of you want more information on what we can do for you please call the smoch customer service line. I don't want to clog up the thread with 'sales talk'.

i wonder if you can just clarify something for me:
is it correct the carat of your wedding ring has/or should match the carat of your engagement ring?
h2b and i have been to buy rings today but i didnt notice until i got home that my wedding ring is 9ct where my E. ring is 18ct. is this going to be an issue as time goes by or should i change it?
all ive got to give to you are these 5 words tonight

thank you for loving me xxx

We brought our rings last year when the price wasn't as high as it is now so I'm thankful for that but I've put on weight and now the ring goes on but is so hard to get off. I'm worried I won't lose it in time and the ring won't go on or get stuck etc. I may now have to get it re sized.

Martay - It isn't a problem - although there is a rule of thumb that 9ct gold is harder than 18ct it doesn't really stand up to scrutiny. In our experience (and we've been in the business for decades) it makes little difference.
As long as you don't spend all day twisting your weding ring around against your engagement ring it will be fine.
Hope that helps!

With 13weeks and a bit to go, the rings are next on our list. I haven't updated my ticker, but I'm glad we waited as I've gone down 2 ring sizes already - my engagement ring is too loose. We hoping to get them sorted this weekend. We have a pretty good idea of what we want, so I'm not too worried yet x

We bought our wedding rings a year before ... and for some unknown reason we both need to have them made bigger! Neither of us have put on any weight (lost a bit actually) and we've no idea why they don't fit now, as when we bought them they were perfect. We didn't try them on again until the week before so we didn't have enough time to get them re-sized beofre the day ... so ow we're wearing them, but they are quite difficult to get them off ... he can (just with a struggle) but I need some hand cream to get mine off now!

Hi,
I'm going to be looking at wedding rings soon and would like 2 look at smooch ones but I wouldnt be deciding at the time as we want to look around all the shops as well - would this be a problem if we made an appointment?
Don't want to feel pressured at the time or get phoned regularly to see if we've made a decision yet - i end up giving in and regretting it later
Better still are you at any wedding exhibitions in Aberdeen soon?
Thanks x

If we end up buying our wedding rings from a representative of yours, do we get a discount if we mention UKBride?

Furtue Mrs Mac - There's no obligation at all if you have an appointment. We encourage you to look around at other jewellers Best thing is to have a look at a few jewellers and ask them about the guarantee
Kastobe - Unfortunately we can't do that as we have so many customers on UKBride and we don';t have much room in our prices for discounts - we keep them as low as possible all the time. However your Smooch Adviser wil do everything they can to give you the best value. By the way - you need to start ordering your rings soon, where-ever you choose, as they can take several weeks to make.
We are working on some kind of offer to UKBride members but we don't know when it will be sorted.

are diamonds and platinum also rising in cost? I've heard they are, so was planning on ordering mine (custom-made platinum wedding band with approx .15 carat small diamonds, plus my e-ring re-shanked in platinum (apart from the head), and a palladium band for my OH) asap. Our wedding is 2.5 years away, but I'm not bothered about ordering them early; it's one less cost to worry about nearer the time, and I'm hoping to get an interest-free deal (out of interest, what terms do you offer?)

Hi Barbie86
Forecasters are all saying that prtecious metals will be going up this year. Gold will be the worst but Platinum and Palladium are expected to follow. Gold has already risen by 9% since January 1st.
Diamonds are more stable but they are unlikely to go down.
We recomend buying as early as you can because it will definitely save you money. Like a few other jewellers if you place an order with us and pay a deposit we'll freeze the price of your rings.

Thanks for getting back to me I was thinking of getting an appointment with you first then slowly looking around - would that be ok? If your at any wedding fairs I could go to that instead? I'm not planning on ordering till summer as I still have baby weight to lose so don't want my ring to be too big but want to know exactly what we're ordering so I can plan in it in our budget (would allow for fluctuations in prices etc) x

we brought out rings a year before wedding, will re try them but they should be fine... Little miss bossy - we couldnt afford these either, we saw some in shop and they were fine. so really we could of got ours anytime. To us the ring is a ring its the meaning behind that was most important, why take out finance one something that you can get just a well closer to home.

just checked out your website and your prices are good for what I want (platinum band with approx 20 tiny diamonds) so I'll book an appointment.
Can I also ask, do you do brushed/satin/matt finish men's palladium rings? OH really does not want a shiny finish, but nearly every ring I've looked at in palladium has a shiny finish :-s
CommentAuthormelliecake
We got ours over a year before the wedding date. Just thought as the price of gold is going up might as well. It took about a month for them to come in, I could only JUST get the right size as I am the smallest size the shop would do (h)! x

they are here to advise you and answer general questions only
Ladies - the mods clearly don't want us to answer your questions for some reason so please see our pages on this website for details of how to contact us direct.

shop around huni, is your engagement ring 18ct or 9ct as you'll need to match them so that your wedding band doesn't rub awayyour e ring, i got mine from the high street and paid just under £400 for both and mine has loads of diamonds in, i got mine with about a year to go as the price of gold just goes up and up at the moment

I'd look at the jewellery quarter website and check out the jeweller pages, you can spec out rings and get an idea of price etc to help you budget - then on the day, remember to haggle!
CommentAuthorSijen
Soon to be Mrs Mann - I have to disagree with you there. When we bought our wedding rings we were told this doesn't matter and my mum has 18ct e.ring and 9ct wedding ring - has worn them every day for 37 years and nothing has happened to them.
Jamiebuttons - I agree with the others, shop around - the high street shops have some good deals. Have a look in the sales as well.
However on saying this, I wouldn't scrimp on something you are going to wear every day for the rest of your lives...we paid out over £1000 for both rings.
10 years together...

CommentAuthorOfficially Mrs M
Sijen - only going off what i have been told by jewellers, everyone has different opinions on the matter
Jamie i imagine with you being a health worker you can't wear your e ring anyway? try local jewellers as you can sometimes haggle with them a bit on the price
