My passport expired this year so I need to get it renewed for when we go on honeymoon. We're getting married in May and was planning on booking our honeymoon in January. I know you can get a passport in your new married name upto 3 months before which would make it February, which is later than we wanted to book, especially if it takes a couple of weeks. When booking a holiday do you need to provide your passport number? What have you had to do?

We didn't have to provide any passport details when booking. I am still travelling in my maiden name and will continue to do so until my passport expires.
Contact the travel company and ask them whether you'll be able to book in your new married name without your passport.

My passport is still in my previous name as well, IDL, I got told that if you have a few years left on it, when you renew it you get the ten years plus the amount of time left on the passport. How true this is I do not know. If we got away I may well just change it as got 2 years left on it now.
If you get it in you new name you won't be able to use it until you are married though.

I think you only get 9 months carried over from an old passport to a new one x

You only need to give you API (additional passenger information) 1-2 weeks before you fly online or at the airport prior to boarding. So you could always wait until you have your new passport in Feb but book your holiday in Jan :)xxxx
I'm having a mare with this one too as I travel a lot for work. My passport expires in Apr 2016 so I'm hoping I can find a slot with no passport-requiring travel to sort it out.

Just looked it up and apparently you have to pay the price of a new passport, I did not know that! I only got mine this year which means it will still have 8 years left when I get married! I think I will be travelling under my maiden name for 8 years haha!

Depends on where ur planning on going and if you need a visa. I work at a travel agents and if it's somewhere needing a visa I'd say get it in your maiden name as visas will need to match passport and some take a while to authorise. Just remember if you do get your passport in your maiden name to book holiday in maiden name also, and same if you apply in married name, book hol in married name.

Unless you're going somewhere that requires a visa, as KelBel said, then you will be fine booking in your married name and then submitting your application 3 months before. You don't need to provide API until a maximum of 2 weeks before travel, depending on the airline (many allow you to submit it within a few days of travel); the only thing they will want at the time of booking is your name, as the tickets will be issued in this name.
Also, re time being carried over, Flossie is correct: the maximum is 9 months. My passport was almost brand-new when we got married (13 months old), and my new one only has an extra 9 months on it.

We weren't asked for passport details when we booked our honeymoon, but I'm keeping mine in my maiden name and then I'll change it when we're back. It wasn't worth the hassle of trying to change it before.

Ill be going on honeymoon in my maiden name as soon as we are back passport will be getting changed to my married name (Just need to mind this when booking holiday for the following year) I still have 8 years on my passport but im willing to pay for the new passport as the name change is really important to me

Just be aware that if you order your passport and then wish to change it later to your married name, you have to pay for a whole new passport!! I'm going to change my passport to my married name when it expires. I just have to remember to book everything holidays in my maiden name until then! x

I don't want to pay twice. So I'm going to apply for my passport in my new surname in February. I just wasn't sure if I needed the passport number, but many of you have said i don't need it until a few weeks before. We aren't going anywhere that you need a visa so should be ok.
Also - do you have to have an in date passport to get registered? Will they let me use an out of date British passport?

I think the extra rules (eg countersigning etc) only apply if it's your first adult passport, or if you look significantly different. If you go to the website it should say. I'd also suggest paying the small extra fee and doing the check and send at the Post Office; they're quite strict now on the photo so it's useful and reduces the chance of it being sent back.

I honeymooned in my maiden name, it really doesn't make any difference...if you get free upgrades you still will with your marriage certificate anyway. I'm lucky my passport runs out in July anyway so can apply for mine now anyway in married name, ,.. Just waiting til we book an holiday before doing so as don't wanna lose any time on it x

as your passport is out of date you will be applying for a NEW passport not a name change to an existing passport
please remember you name on passport MUST match the name on the ticket ... you CANNOT travel with your maiden name on passport and ticket in married name and think that producing a marraige certificate will enable you to travel ...YOU WILL get refused
I don't know how true it is GF but good job it is still in my maiden name because I need it in 2 weeks for work to get entry to one of our high security establishments and because I still use my maiden name at work its the only legal document I have left that matches my staff ID.

The maximum you can have added to a passport is 9 months
I travelled in my maiden name, as my passport had a few years left. I did change it after we returned and sacrificed a few years then, but didn't realise that you can change your name on your passport before the wedding. I didn't need to give my passport details until we applied for visas, which for Turkey are a bit different for most visas and can be done online. We did those a couple of months before.
