This may be a really stupid question as I'm pretty sure I already know the answer.... but can people be ordained to perform civil ceremonies in the UK (like they can in the USA)?? I only as because I have tried to g00gle it but it came up with a load of websites saying yes we can ordain you for £xxxxx and another load of websites explaining why this isn't legal in the UK but they were all a good 5 years out of date, so I'm wondering if the laws have changed recently? TIA

It isn't legal in the UK. You have to do the legal bit in a licensed building with a registrar. But it is getting more common to do the legal bit on the quiet, then holding a ceremony after/before which can be personalized to you and anybody can do it :)

The short answer to this is NO
you have to be licenced to preform a marriage however you could go off and have your "legal " ceremony and then do another infront of family and friends with someone special to you to carry the ceremony through as this has no legal basis
