I have arranged a meet with a cake lady for the 15th Feb but I'm stunned at the different prices quoted
For exactly the same cake, I have been quoted £700, £350 and finally £230
I'm wanting something fairly basic and just cannot get my head around the huge price differences.
I think what's done me is the £700 was quoted by my OH's brothers girlfriend!!! To be honest, I'm quite angry about. I didn't expect it for nothing but certainly not the highest price!

Oh well, I've had the last laugh

That is a huge difference in prices. At least the lower two are kinda near each other, but £700!!!!!! Jeez.

    Nice cake by the way.

Maybe she thought you would choose her anyway so chucked a price at you thinking you would go for it.

£700 is an awful lot of money and way more than the average couple would spend, can't believe that's a "mates rates" quote as well, that's astronomcial! £230 is a fab quote. I've been quoted around the same for a naked cake so that's without the icing and detailing etc... So Fab quote x

I would be a bit concerned by the 250 one that the quality would be good. Defiantly make sure you have a tasteing and see some examples of their work. That's very cheap for so much cake.
Ours is costing 250 and is only a 3 teir with no ribbon

Our cake lady would charge around 250 -300 for that type of cake. Obviously the more detail the higher the price. 700 for that is ridiculous, you would expect so much more detail on each tier for that kind of price. Always book a tasting before putting a deposit down. We loved our tasting ;) x

Yes I'd say definitely attend a tasting session and see as much of her work as possible before putting down a deposit. In reality, that is still a lot of money for a bit of cake, but in wedding terms it is a good quote x

What does your brothers GF take you for? I'd slap her with a loaf of bread for that! Shocking. How rude.

I'd have a tasting and ask to see a portfolio of the cheapest, and if you're happy with their work, go for it! Gorgeous cake! X

    April. LOL

My cake is costing £500 delivered but we have a lot of detail in the cake and the woman's cakes are out of this world. Cant wait to go for my final tasting in May.

It could be that the SIL was full of good intentions but priced herself out purposely so that she didnt need to do it and can enjoy the run up to the wedding.

I agree ladies..... As soon as she said £700 i thought WHAT????? Im not a mug

As i said, im meeting with the lady on the 15th Feb and i have seen her website and had recommendations from friends..... she is preparing samples too so my healthy eating is out of the question that day lol....

The deposit is only £30 so worst case scenario, i secure the date and then change my mind, i only lose £30. I know i shouldnt think like that because money is soooo tight but hey,

    Crikey! £700 for cake?

We had 2 quotes, one for £600 and one for £400 both including delivery and set up. The most expensive one was based really close to our venue and her cakes were dry and tasteless. The cheapest one was a 45 minutes drive from the venue around the m25 and her cakes were so moist and full of flavour. No prizes for guessing who we went with.

Decide after tastings who you want to go for and who you get the best vibe from helps.

Think your FBIL 's gf is taking the p155.

    It's a beautiful cake.

Blimey I'm getting my cake for free however for £700 I would expect a lot more detail and cake etc than what you at looking for.

Cheap doesnt mean it won't be nice, bear in mind I'm having a 3 tier cake and the cost of the stuff to make it is so cheap, most suppliers can make a cake for next to nothing and then stick a lot of money on to the final cost for making it. Some people don't believe in charging too much for the labour. X

Wow £700! I had the same when I was looking for quotes; my cousin's now wife didn't give me any 'family/mate rates' either and quoted me the same as everyone else. I wasn't expecting the cake for nothing either but she made my other cousin's cake for just the price of the ingredients :(
