So I was just on FB at lunchtime and a local radio station ask if anyone has any wedding related nightmares to share. And come across this comment:
got my wedding dress from chr****bel and k**ts in hartlepool, The owner made such a mess of it and refused to give me a refund I stood my ground and took her to court I was not only refunded my dress money but also for my wedding dvd, album and compo for stress caused. Ive since heard she has made several more mistakes but people havent been as brave and confronted her. Moral of the story ... dont step foot into her shop!
I've g00gled for reviews but there are none anywhere.
I know this might not be as bad as it sounds but it's not something I wanted to read

Hmmm... Why was she refunded photography related money ?? Surely if the dress was so bad it 'ruined' her wedding, she wouldn't have worn it and got another one ?? If I wasn't happy with mine but knew I wouldn't get the money back in time, I'd get a credit card out to buy a new one or something.. No way would I be unhappy on my wedding day !! She sounds like she's milked it for all she could get tbh... That's just my opinion though xxx

sounds a little bit dodgy but get your dress in plenty of time in case anything goes wrong. this person just sounds like a serial complainer so i wouldnt worry too much. if the shop was that bad then no-one would go there and it wouldnt still be open xx

oh no there's another comment now!
I got my bridesmaid dresses from chr****bel and k**ts too, they didn't fit when we picked them up, she had the cheek to say they'd put on weight when they lost it. We ended up having to remove the zips the night before the wedding, and my auntie sewed buttons on both. We took her to trading standards and got refund. But apparently she says she never gets complaints!!

I'd maybe copy down these comments and call trading standards to see what rights you have if either of these things happen or should you want to go into the shop and ask for a refund now as you're having doubts about their capability.... I'd cover your back before anything happens rather than waiting to see if anything does xxx

They'll tell you exactly what position you're in and how you can go about it.. Ask them if you have the right to pull out of the contract (even if you don't want to, the information is handy) Ask them will you be able to get your money back IF anything happens etc etc.. Information is power, even if its just waiting in the wings, at least you know it's there xxx

oh no:
I have lots of people approaching me about her, suits different colours and not matching, telling people they have put a lot of weight on when dresses dont fit, the latest complaint I heard was she promised to make black bridesmaid dresses and only completed them days before the wedding on the actual day whilst outside and pics getting taken the bride realised the dresses were in fact bottle green she was gutted as her colour theme was black and white. I could honestly write a book about her total incompetance. I was very pleased that I wiped the smug look off both her and her arrogent husbands face when the judge started totaling up how much she had to pay me which went into thousands! She is so cocky and continues to both lie and trade because people say whats the point of making a complaint , it wont bring back their special day. My answer to that is hopefully it will stop her ruining anybody elses. Im pleased you took action and didnt let her get away with it.

So I contacted the shop direct to ask exactly what happened and she held her hands up and said there was a mistake made on the first dress mentioned but that one of the others was before she had the shop.
Cut a long story short, she has reassured me and I'm hoping that if anything it will make her be super careful with mine. She is however contacting her solicitor as this first girls case was settled but she's now putting this stuff on FB including the full shop name and making claims about the woman's husband being arrogant.
I hope this is just one disgruntled customer.

Try not to read too much into the bad reviews as it sounds like some of them were just out to get what they could.
As far as the wrong size and colour dresses goes, I would be concerned but I think you've done the right thing by calling her to ask about it as it probably will make her extra careful with your order x

I wouldn't get to anxious - there isn't a business out there that doesn't have one or two bad reviews and if there's none online, I wouldn't pain. I think you have done Exactly the right thing xx

do you have wedding insurance as that would cover you for if anything does happen, i think me personally i would see about going somewhere else if you havn't paid a lot of money to her. x

Yeah...sometimes people that are less than savoury or get the wrong end of the stick, or make a big mistake that affects their day and will try to apportion blame to vendors... sometimes the reviews aren't 100% the full story! Were there good reviews too?

I couldn't find any reviews. These were just comments on FB :-(

Try not to worry Sonya; it could just be a disgruntled customer but I'd still suggest phoning trading standards and take out wedding insurance if you haven't already as they will cover you if anything goes wrong which I'm sure it won' :)

I do have insurance so at least I'll be covered. I'm not planning on getting my bridesmaid dresses from a bridal store anyway so at least she won't be able to get those wrong. It will just be any adjustments to mine that she does which I guess is the most important so still a little worrying.
I can't go somewhere else now as we've paid a third of the dress already - well my mum has.

The problem with reviews is that people are far more willing to say negative reviews than positive. Even then you don't know who is in the right, the dress maker or the customer. Like others have said you have plenty of time to change your mind or fix a problem with the dress, if one arises, and you have insurance, but I understand that you just don't want that stress.

And if you have the dress a week before at least, you can have some time to find an alternative off the peg...if worse comes to worse!

Is it the alterations that she's messed up? If so, why not just get the dress from her and get your alterations done elsewhere? If you're feeling nervous about it all?
