HELP!! My partner and I are looking into our wedding cake and some companies are asking crazy prices. I mean like £300 for a sponge cake is ridiculous!! Anyway my fiancé's Gran has offered to make our cake for us if we buy the ingredients and everything we else we need for it. The thing is some of the family are telling us not to go for it incase she messes it up! She done one of her Grand-Daughter's wedding cake and she has done nothing but moan about it for the past 3 years about how the whole cake ruined her wedding! I was there and the cake was beautiful as well as the other wedding cakes she has done. I would like her to do it but their comments are making me doubt my decision.. Any ideas on what to do??

£300 is about the norm for a 2-tier wedding cake (were paying £340), but if she can do just as good a job, then brilliant.

I'm not wanting anything fancy. Just simple but elegant :) Her cakes are amazing. It's just all the bitching I can't deal with. Sometimes I think it would be easier to get a baker to do it to stop all of that but on the other hand I can save 300 quid and put it towards something else if I get my fiancé's Gran to do it for us. Plus the woman I got to do my Mum's wedding cake last year only took 60 quid for a 2 tier cake but she can't do ours :(

We had a 4 tier cake which including delivery (had to deliver over 20 miles away) cost us £400. The more extravagant and detailed the cake the more expensive it is. £300 sounds right for a wedding cake that isn't really detailed in deco or huge.

In relation to your grandmother doing the cake, if you like the work you've seen then go for it, everyone has different taste somif you're happy with it that's all that matters xx

If you like her cake then go with her. I would ask my sister make mine but she told me no as she doesn't want to mess it up....so I will be gettingher to make chocolate to go on the tables for after dinner.

Have you thought about going to Asda or M&S and getting their cakes and then just getting extra decoraion for them will save you a small fortune if you choose not to go with gran xx

I done that for my cousin's wedding, went to asda and bought their fruit cake and done hers but I just want a sponge cake. I just feel like i've got to please everyone instead of doing what's best for us. Her cakes really are beautiful, I just wish people would keep their comments to themselves instead of making me feel bad for trying to save a bit of money because we are working our backsides off to pay for the wedding ourselves. I think I'll go with Gran's and tell them all where to go! I can't please everyone so I might as well please myself.. Thank you for your comments :) xx

We are paying between £220 and £260 for our 3 tiered/3 flavoured cake so can see why you don't want to pay £300!!

Have you looked into supermarkets? Some of their cakes are lovely and then perhaps you could get your OH's gran to decorate it maybe?

I recently found out a wedding I went to recently, her cake came from W@It-rose! I would never have guessed it!

The cakes are that expensive because of all the work that goes into them, all the supplies, paying for time, electricity as well as the ingredients!

Like I stated before I bought my Mum's wedding cake last year from a baker I know and only paid £60, that's why I grudge paying that kind of money but unfortunately she can't do our wedding cake. I understand the time they put into cakes and effort they put into their cakes but it's still expensive! And I also grudge paying that money because I know I can have it done for me by my fiancé's Gran. But what my question orginally was wither to put up with the hassle and have H2B's Gran to do it or pay the money and not have as much stress! Mrs T. 2 Be was it a sponge cake or a fruit cake? I know Asda do lovely fruit cakes but I'd really like a sponge cake :) x

I'm not sure but I think m and s do sponge cakes?

I don't know why people would be moaning if you had h2b's gran doing the cake? If you trust her to do a good job, then I don't see the problem

And as to all the agro with everyone else just say its ur wedding u will do what makes you happy. If they want to keep complaining tell them to do it elsewhere. Or a more polite or rude version of that xx

Rhiannon the reviews on them are fantastic :).. I'm nearly at breaking point with them all. It's nothing but hassle, it's as if my wedding can't be as good as theirs.. Our wedding budget is around £10,000 which is alot of money which my h2b and I are working our backsides off to save up, as we are paying for it ourselves. They all want to get their bit in, even if it's nothing to do with them! Xx

My Mum and sister in law are making our cake. I'm taking the view that I don't care if it's perfect, I want it to be special. Buying it from a shop would not be special. Having Mum and SIL making it will be special, even if its not perfection. I made my friend's cake and travelled it from Plymouth to the north of Scotland. By the time we got there it wasn't perfect, but it was special to the bride as she'd asked me years before if I'd do it when we were at uni and they were not even engaged.

Special over perfection in my book :) x

You've got the right idea December :) I think I'm going to get her to do it :). As you said even if its not perfect it's came from the heart. Plus that way I can keep an eye on it and even decorate it myself so I know it'll be the way I like it. I just want it simple though, 2/3tiers, royal blue ribbon and a monogram cake topper x

I saw in the big orange supermarket the other day that up can buy wedding cakes now!! About 4 different sizes which you could obviously tier and are plain white so then maybe you/his gran could decorate it. If you only want simple I'm
Sure you could do it easy enough by getting bits off the bay?! Xx
