Sounds like you need to start with non-weight bearing exercise. Have you thought about seeing a personal trainer who specialises in rehab from surgery/injury? I am seeing one after my knee operation, and I don't pay tons to see her every week or anything, I just paid for 2 sessions - 1 assessment, and 1 for her to give me an exercise program to work on, and I will just book another session whenever I feel I need to move on with the program.

Other than that, it would depend on the muscles that have wasted as to what exercise you need to do. If you have access to a gym, I would say use an exercise bike, swim, cross trainer, rowing machine, leg extension weights machine, abductor/adductor weights machine - all of these will build up your leg strength.

If you don't have access to a gym - try leg exercises with one of those resistance bands.

i am seeing a physio but i just feel the exercises she is giving me are not working any more im doing squats, leg extensions with weights strapped to ankle I went to the gym the other day and as im still on crutches they are not letting me use the equiptment or the swimming pool just in case anything happens and i sue them i have told them to write a thing that i sign to say i am not going to sue them but they still say no. I did have a bike got it out left it in the garden and some naughty person stole it.
Im also going up and down stairs alot and walking but when my whole leg starts shaking its not nice and feels very weak so i rest for abit then do a bit more.
May look into 1 of the resistance bands though see if can get my hands on one :-) x

The sell them at places like tesco or argos etc. FAiling that, the internet!

If you feel the excercises arent working then tell your physio, then they might be able to change what you are doing. Remember they cannot feel what you feel so they might need you to tell them

i did mention to her 2 weeks ago that i didnt think they were working and she said it will take time im back seeing her monday so i will have another word see if she can give me more then and back at hospital week friday so will see if the specialist can reccommend anything else for me to do. I maybe being inpatient as i been off work for so long and just wanting to get back to normality but then again it really could just not be working x

Oh I know all about it not happening fast enough! I am so impatient with my knee :-) It still hurts doing certain things, and it's nearly 4 months since the operation, but I can now do most things okay, and can get up stairs without pain, which is an improvement from how it was before the op, so I have to focus on the positives.

my knee is still really swollen which everyone else says its cos im doing to much but surely u cannt do to much when ur trying to get strength back?? its more uncomfatable than painful apart form couple days ago when it felt like tendons/ligaments were being ripped off my bone guess im going to have to sit tight and be patient for a change

You've had less time and a much more major op than me, so to be honest to manage what you are currently, I think you're doing really really well - don't get disheartened :-) I only had my knee cap smoothed and the joint washed out.

id be careful with the resistance bands i was given one but it only really works your calf muscle although it does depend on what exercises you are given! Id speak to your physio before adding any other exercises because as much as you dont feel the exercises you have been given are working if you do others you could be doing more damage than good!! I had an op on my tendon on october 19th and im still struggling to walk for more than 10 mins! then my leg starts hurting a lot more! please go careful because you dont want to set everything back and make things worse xxx

i hope everything gets sorted out for you though hun xx

and im not allowed to go swimming either in case i slip on side of the pool :( x

Personally I wouldn't be doing anything without the say so from your physio. You want to move forward not take steps backwards by doing things that could cause damage. Get them to give you a list of what you can and can't do and stick to it.

I guess so but im just getting so frustrated and feel like everything has come to a stand still and its just annoying that i want to do more to get the muscles all built back up again it looks silly having 1 leg with muscles and the other just bone covered with skin.
Oh Krazykitty ur still having problems when u had it done so long ago poor u. are u able to carry on with normal daily stuff or are u struggling?
I know i should really listen and do what im told as they are the experts but they need to start telling me something that will work quicker.
Thank u for all ur advice i will take it in xx

I know what you mean as I used to get frustrated before when I first had my accident. The physio kept telling me to rest up which I never did and after two years of fighting I finally gave in. Since them my pain levels have dropped to a point in which I can start building things up constructively. If I over do things I set myself back again and the pain comes back so I know they are right in what they say but saying and doing are two different things. I just wish I had learnt to listen earlier.
