The priest at our church (who is not conducting the ceremony) was talking to us after church last week. I mentioned that we had got our pew ends etc and that we have our organist. He turned round and said that it is church ettiquete (sp) to have the parish organist and in the case of not having her we would still have to pay her!!!!
    1. Its the first wedding at our church for over 3 years.
    2. She's been there 2 years so when did this ettiquete start??
    3. Is it right to pay for something we're not having?

I wouldn't mind but she is awful - a comedy organist! Millions of duff notes that set me off in giggles in church!
Mum reckons that we should just pay her and cut down the church donation. I think its cheeky of them!

There is no such rule! If the organist isnt being used then she shouldnt be paid.. I would reduce the donation hun!

Has the priest said how much the organist would be..

The organist i wanted is going on holiday on the day of our wedding so we have to have another lady who is charging us £100!!!!!

we have to hire her because you cant have a wedding service without an organist or any form of music, and our priest wont allow us to play cds.. x

What is with churches trying to rip people off!!! There should be set prices all over the country and they should be stuck to. It's not fair that they can just say you have to so much for this and so much for that. The church we wanted to get married in want £575 just for the service and nothing else. But we are moving next week and the church where we are moving to want £600 and that includes everything, so we have decided to go there instead.

sorry but that is stupid. the rule has only just come in? well sounds to me that they are just trying to make money. if i were you i would ask the vicar for the ladies phone number and ask her about it. i cant understand how they can just invent this rule! xx

That's crazy! If you can't take the vicar out of this idiocy, then I would certainly cut my donation to the church! Makes me mad that they think they can do things like this!!!

I would be keen to see this rule amongst their set down costs fro their church Suzie as I think its highly unfair to pay for a service you are not using. I know when we met with our minister we got a list of people we could contact if we wished to have an organist and included in the list were those that didnt play at our church at all and if we had picked one of them we would have just paid them and not the church organist as well. Seems a very stupid rule and I would question it. xx

that seems a bit of a scam, when i got married the first time the organist was in with the price of the church and didnt have to pay extra for him, so cut a big chunk of the church donation.

felicity.n the proper name is church officer :D. i am getting her for free - but at our church she is usually £60 (its our wedding present to us as we know her and invited her to the wedding) we are paying £60 to the organist - but he is good and also a music teacher at one of the local schools (lucky we are having the wedding during the school holidays lol) £150 to the church - since we are non members (£100 for members) and £25 to the parking attendant. so all in will only cost us £235 (but should have been £295)

As for having to pay the organist even if you are not having her - i would not be happy at this very minute. How can you be expected to pay for some one who will not be doing anything and is rubbish at playing.I would be taking it out of the church donation.

Definitely reduce the donation if they're making you pay for an organist who is not only bad but not being used. I can't believe a house of God would actually try and gouge people. It's ridiculous!

We have to pay for the organist at our church £50. We thought maybe we could not have him and play the hymns on cd as we have to take a cd player and set it up in the church. My thoughts were as we couldn't afford the choir it might sound better but after saying that to our vicar he rang the organist there and then and booked him!

Glad u guys agree with me! We're so annoyed especially as we go there every week. Found out that the organist is actually the priests housekeeper!! I reckon he is scared of upsetting her! Made me laugh that her name is Marrie!
We had done so well with the organist we had booked wanting £50 and he is really good :0S
Well the priest ain't budging so we got to pay her £50 for doing nothing at all - diddly squat! We are gonna cut the donation!!
