A family friend of my OH is making our wedding cake for us - I've seen the cake she made for my MIL's 60th and it looked amazing.

Though when it comes to flavour I had in mind vanilla or chocolate, or tiers of both.

Although I'm being advised (i.e. told) that the base must be fruit cake. I'm just not a fan, and OH likes it but can only eat in small amounts through his illness (not that I'm expecting us to eat the entire thing! :P)

Amongst our friends fruit cake is definatley an acquired taste, and those who do like fruit cake, like any other cake.

We were originally looking at getting cupcake style wedding cake but later decided for a real cake. Although at this rate I'm debating on doing something 'alternative' just to avoid having it.

This is about as bridezilla as I get, but I don't want to be told what kind of flavour to have :(

I guess fruit is traditional - and keeps so much longer - but we went with all 3 tiers sponge.
    Have what you want x

We had even talked about having a crispy cake base or something like that instead of fruit cake, so it's technically more sturdy and gets around the problem, plus it would be a little different!

I'm not really bothered about tradition - I don't think my OH is either. I like the crispy cake base idea though...

My mil is making our cake, I'm having 3 tiers 1 chocolate and praline, 1 white chocolate and praline and I will also have a fruit tier, I know my mil is looking forward and feels honoured that we have asked her to do this and I know she is looking forward to starting the fruit part 6 months before so she can feed it with vodka.

My best friend got married 3 weeks ago, she had a four tier sponge cake, because the bottom tier was not sturdy enough to hold the weight of the other cakes her cake collapsed hours before the wedding. We had to go and buy an off the shelf wedding cake and decorate it the morning of her wedding, i woud hate for anyone else to go though my what friend did so my advise would be to chose a sturdy base ( fruit or simular density) or go with the cup cake idea xx

I make cakes and you don't HAVE to have the bottom tier as fruit. Some might recommend it to hold the weight of the other tiers but that's what dowels are for. If she really wants to do you a fruit tier, ask for it to be the smallest!

we aren't having any fruit cake either I know most of it would be wasted so there is just no point using the biggest tier of my cake for something that will go in the bin. my cake maker says that it can all be sponge and will be fine as long as it as enough dowels in it.

Fruit base is traditional but it is not essential; you can have whatever you want. Like AussieLinz said; support is what the dowels are for. :)

My brothers GF is making our cake. I wanted sponge as I dont think anyone likes fruit! But she's said she'll need time to do the decorating, so has asked if we can have fruit, so that she can have time to make it look awesome.

So her and my Mum came up with a plan... (Mum is making the actual cake, bro's GF is decorating)

    - Make the wedding cake out of fruit cake.

    - Hide some sponge cake in the back. When the cake is give out, slice up the sponge and put that out too, so there is both for people to eat

Could you do a sneaky manoeuvre like that?

The friend who is making the cake hasn't really suggested anything as we don't get to speak to her that often, it's MIL. The baker is effectively MIL's best friend.

MIL has been sort of throwing the old argument that it's traditional and the older guests (about 6 out of our entire guest list including day and night!) might want fruit cake.
My response is they're not going to turn their nose up at a portion of cake because it's not fruit cake?

"Oh I simply can't eat this! Where's the fruit?! Unacceptable!"

We're going to try and speak to the friend to get her opinion. If we can't get away with the crispy cake (or something similar) style idea, then I'll probably just go back to the cupcake plan. The entire reasoning for the fruit cake base was for 'sturdiness' apparently, but decided to throw the guest argument in as well, otherwise I would quite happily have it as the top tier as it's not as much to go to waste.

If you wanted fruit for these guests M&$ do a small wedding 'cutting' fruit cake. Just like a bar that isn't displayed but brought out with the rest of the cake when it's served.
