I'm planning on going dress shopping in mid August, I know you have to pre book appointments but how far in advance should I book?
CommentAuthorkittyh
I think most places you should probably book around 2 weeks in advance if its a weekend appointment...but if you know what shops you want to make appointments at and the date and time then there is no harm in doing it as soon as you have a chance - that way you will have the pick of the appointment slots. I know a couple of places I went I booked last minute and got a dodgy 9am appointment with a hangover! Just don't do too many in one day - i think 1/2 is enough it gets tiring! and if you do two then make sure you have a nice break in between for a coffee or some lunch :)

From talking to some dress shops recently they suggested about a month to make sure you get time you want especially on weekends but week day 3-2 weeks before :)

I booked some for next week in May, one of the ladies said they were taking first try on bookings up until December currently, and people are starting to ask for January!

I'd better get ringing then!! Planning on doing 1 shop for myself in the morning then a light lunch before going bridesmaid dress shopping. Is there a limit to how many people can come? My mum & moh will be coming, my niece (bridesmaid) also wants to come.
Seriously? Every single shop we've gone to pretty much has said either come in now/during the week or we can wait till the weekend!! x

That's good :) I did hear that some places charge for booking appointments in some cities and then if you buy they take the amount off the dress or if not you lose the money ! I found that weird or is it just me being a dress shop newbie lol

I never had to make an appointment. I ended up deciding i wanted to go dress shopping just before I went to bed. The next morning (Sunday!) I was looking online at the bridal stores in my town and was worrying they would be closed and ended up going to an outlet half hour away with no appointment necessary and went home with my dress on the day! I guess I got lucky though lol. Only one shop! X

I was more worried about it being a premature buy than worrying about it being the right one! As it was an outlet I had to decide there and then, as if I wanted a day to think about it, somebody probably would have had it by the time I went back. My sister actually said she heard a girl behind me say "if she doesn't buy that dress I want to try it on" ... So I bought it ha! I was a bit disappointed I didn't have the initial "wow it's my dress" I did really like it then showed my FMIL and sister and they loved it, i heard the gasps of people waiting outside before they could go in, then saw FMIL and sister cry, so I cried! It wasn't how I expected it. It was the first dress I picked up but 4th I tried on! I tried a couple more after but I didn't like them at all and put my dress back on with a veil etc and loved it even more. I would really have loved to try more dresses on as I feel like I didn't really get the full experience but I wouldn't at risk of finding another dress! I love mine and I'm happy with it. X

I think this is the curse of the south east in my case anyway, people scramble for last minute Saturday appointments in particular :)

It depends on the shop, the one I bought my dress from I had to wait about a month for first appointment, but only a week for the second. They only let 2 people come with you and allocate you an hour. Very strict no photo policy too.
But the other shop I went to I had an appointment within 2 weeks, you could have up to 4 people, and they encouraged photos so you look at yourself and decide. They gave me an hour and a half.
Both had very strict weekday only appointments for fittings once you have bought a dress

I think it does depend where u live, big cities may have longer waiting lists...where I live I got in to all the boutiques I wanted to go to within a week but wouldn't be the same everywhere, I got my dress wth about 18months to go to the wedding but I only looked that early because I expected to be really fussy and not find anything I liked for months and it was in the second shop in the end,x

I say it's never too early however what if you fall in love with a dress and you wait and then can't get it.
I'm being re measured in Jan and my dress will be ordered from then however the designer knows what dress I've paid the deposit on.

Some stores can fit you in with a couple of weeks notice, others that are popular like the pr0n0v1a5 on bond street need 8 weeks advance notice minimum.

Most stores/designers ask for orders 6 - 9 months before the wedding so there is time for the dress to be made. Any less is cutting it fine unless you get off the peg or a sample dress.
I started looking at 14 months before the wedding at my sister's request ..................she was too excited and wouldn't wait for me to start at 12 months before lol.

whaaaattt...! I woke up one day, decided to go dress shopping with mum, started driving to Glasgow and in the car searched on my phone for bridal shops, phoned three to let them know I was coming and that was that! No appointment needed for any of them! Oh and that was a Saturday :)

This thread has made me think, would I have to make an appt even if I'm only looking for something for the evening do? Anybody here know how busy shops in Cheltenham or Gloucester are likely to be in September?
I mean, I've pretty much already decided on my ceremony dress as it required a lot of thought and careful wording in g00gle to find anything medieval that didn't look "wenchy" (for want of a better word!)...
