Hi all, I'm trying to find way to reduce our budget or just get rid of the things we don't need. I love cake and will be having a wedding cake but I'm contemplating buying 3 tiers from somewhere like 'em'&'es' or similar and decorating myself. Lots if the designs we like are simple, like ribbon detailing or trailing sugar flowers, so I refuse to pay £300++ for someone to do it for me when mum and I can do it. OH has started a row about it as he is a baker and refuses to have a 'cheap and crap cake'!! Bear in mind he took no interest before now. All he is ever interested in is having something expensive or something 'better' than someone else. He's a bread baker so can't make cakes himself, which is a shame. But he's made no effort to put forward contacts from the industry.
Just being a snob about it!!
Anyway, my point really is has anyone done this? Or can you help me understand the need for paying so much for a cake? A cake I'll barely see and barely eat at that!!!!
ARG.

My best friend is making our wedding cake as a wedding present :-) A lot cheaper than buying one!

I did think about this, but due to the design we are having we decided to order one. I suppose it depends how particular you are over the taste whether you think that spending a lot of money is justified. Maybe this will motivate your h2b to contact someone he knows. X

My sister suggested this idea to me, so a few days before me, my mum and my two sisters will all have a nice day of decorating cakes bought from a high street supermarket. It will be a good way to cut costs plus I don't even like cake, will be a nice day for the girly side of my family. Might invite my MIL2B as well she is very creative. I don't see the point in spending a few hundred pounds on a cake but I am slightly bias as I don't eat cake and won't touch it.
