    Hello
So I am making my own wedding cake and have started to look at cake tins. We are having a round cake with 3 tiers. Ihave looked at the sizes I will need to cater for all of the guests. So it turns out I need 6".9" and 12" tins :S the only thing is that I will need to hire or buy them anyone know where I can buy or hire from at a reasonable price? Also I was going to have three different flavours fruit, choc and sponge (is this too much to take on??) shall i just stick to fruit :S hmmm decisions, decisions! xAny help will be much appreciated

Speak with local bakers, kitchenware shops and market stalls - they often have tins available for hire for a decent price. There's always the bay (plus you could always sell them on the bay again afterwards). I would go with the different flavours, but I hate fruit cake with a passion anyway, but have a few practice runs as soon as you get your hands on the tins. Best of luck.

I'm guessing you are good at baking and know how to make a cake?

If you know then I'd say go for it, the only thing with having the sponge and fruit is that you would need to make the sponge layers close to the day.... so it would depend how much else you had on the day or so before the wedding, as to whether it's worth making sponge layers or just stick with fruit.

As for the tins I've never heard of anywhere hiring them.... could you buy and then sell on after?

I hire mine from a local cake decorating supplies shop. They charge £1 per item per day with a £20 deposit I get back.

I'm doing 3 flavours, fruit on the bottom, coconut & lime then chocolate. If you're stacking them make sure you use dowels to support the layers. If you're doing fruit and want to feed it with brandy you need to think about making it soon. I get married in sept and will make my fruit layer in July then the sponge 2 days before - will cover in sugarpaste same day so it doesn't go stale

You can bake, ice with the fondant and freeze in a cardboard cake box well in advance. Just a tip.
But yes, hiring is easy, even my high street kitchen shop does tin hire, just ask in the shop :)

Personally I wouldn't freeze fondant, it goes really sticky when defrosting. If you must you can freeze the sponges but let them fully defrost before icing them. Wrap them in cling film them in a carrier bag before freezing

Regarding the icing it depends if you're doing royal or fondant. Royal you could probably do about a week before but fondant probably no more than 3 days before

I also hate fruit cake but h2b loves it so we're going to have half fruit cake and half sponge. Also fruit cake keeps and I think its tradition to have some saved for your first child's christening so we can still do that if we want.

You could always try charity shops too for cake tins. I have seen them there a few times

DONT freeze once you have iced it if you are using fondant icing ...... you can make a sponge cake in advance and freeze it then just thaw fill and ice , a fruit cake is best made then "fed" with alcohol ,kept in an airtight container
