American actress Zoe Saldana has responded to criticism following her husband's decision to adopt her surname after marriage. It's usually women who take their partner's name - but are things changing?
There has been a rise apparently of men taking on the surname of their new wife instead of the traditional new wife taking her husband's name.
When I suggested I double-barrelled my name my hubby wasn't keen at all and wanted me to just give up my maiden name and take his name, I gave in to his wish.
What's everyone else's view on the man taking his wife's name rather than double-barrelling or the wife doing the traditional thing?

Each to their own I say. If it works for the individual couple then great - but I personally have always known I'd take my husband's surname.

I like my hubby to be's surnmne better than mine so I'm defo taking his :)
I don't think it should matter - what ever folk are happy with, so what if that happens to be the brides name :)

I'm quite liking the idea of men taking on the wife's name lol.

A friend of mine chose to double barrel her surname and her new husband did the same so they both have the same double barrelled surname. Nice way to compromise I suppose although personally, I will just be taking my h2b's surname.

I don't like the idea at all but if 2 people are happy with it then why not I suppose. The tradition of the bride taking the groom's name is one I hope stays around for a long, long time!

I have to admit I keep my maiden name at work so everyone at work still knows me as before. It's only outside work and all official documents I have my married name (apart from I've not actually done my passport yet!)
I will always keep my maiden name at work even if I change jobs.

I will change my name at work as well, although it might be confusing for people at first. But I want to fully and completely be a Pringle!

My name is long enough anyway without double barrelling! I have no attachment to my surname so glad to get rid of it! Not sure how OH would react if I had asked him to take mine!

Don't get me started on surnames.... This has been a running debate with us for months! We are both ladies for those that don't know and it's very difficult deciding what to do but I THINK we have finally agreed on me taking my wife's name although it's not completely right!

Could you both double barrel? Then you'll both match and get to keep your name? It's a win win then x

We could, but it would make our name ridiculously long unfortunately :/ Good idea though, we thought of that too! x

With us its worked to double-barrel. It wasnt an easy decision to make but it was a quick one.
Before we got engaged I was pregnant with our eldest. I have never known my father & my mother gave me her maiden name. I have never known my fathers name & at times I do resent the fact that I cant find him or his family as my mother wouldnt give me any information, now shes not around to ask her repeatedly. I have also always had a different name to the rest of my imediate family (brother had his dads name & mother married taking her husbands name leaving me the odd one out, then she divorced returning to her maiden name leaving my brother the odd one out, then she had my sister & double-barrelled my sisters name, then she remarried taking her husbands name & changing my sisters name to match, once again leaving me & my brother with two completely different names) when we found out I was pregnant we had only been together for 4months. I knew there was a chance that hubby would up & leave & wanted my child to have a way of finding his paternal side of the family if he wished to & giving his fathers name was a good way to do this if something was to go sour between me & hubby without him needing to ask me any details (i know when i asked my mother, i was worried it would upset her).
However on the other hand.... my grandparents had 4 girls & a boy, my uncle is struggling to have kids & so there is no one other than me to pass the name on (all aunts have taken their husbands names) & I love how unusual & old my name is... I have discovered (via backdating my name via family history etc) that it means "decendant of cain" (before there were names there were meanings) my name is very unuasual & old & i hate the idea of the name dying out with me. I also wanted to have the same name as my immediate family.
I chose to double barrel my sons name & stated (when we did get engaged) that i will be double - barreling my name upon marriage, I told hubby that it would mean everything to me if he did the same but that it was his personal choice & now that he knows how i feel about it i will leave the decision up to him. He had an arguement with his family & stated he will be dropping his name completely & souley taking on my name.... I was devestated having already given our children (2 by this point) both names i knew there was no chance of ever having the same name as all of my immediate family without changing the kids names (which i didnt want to do). but hubby calmed down & asked me to sort out a deed poll for him to take both names. I was over the moon. I can officially state that me, my husband & my 2 children are the only people in the world to have the name we now have. "Killgallon-Tilley". Yes its a mouthful (especially my name which is now 3 names all of which are double barreled.... 6 names total) but at the same time something may happen to one of us or between us & at least our children have the opportunity to discover their family if they get seperated from them (ie. a huge fight where one side of family is cut out of our lives or something). Our children will have the chance i never had.
if hubby said he would take my name upon marriage BEFORE we registered our eldests birth then i wouldnt have had an issue at all, infact i would love the idea, i know my grandad is overjoyed that we chose to continue the name on even if we did double barrel. he cant express to us how happy he is with our choice to continue his name as without us his name would have died out.
im in no way against a woman taking her husbands name, & if circumstances were different (ie i knew details of how to contact my father, my uncle being able to continue the name etc) i may have felt differently about it, i may well have taken hubbys name completely... but i am very happy with the choice we have made.
I was explaining to our eldest (7) regarding name changes when me & daddy get married & he asked if i would have the same name as him & his brother, i said yes, he asked if daddy would & i explained daddy had to do something extra in order to have the same name. my boys asked if i could print out their surname & physically give it to daddy on the wedding day once he had done his deed poll. it was a very proud moment for our children to finally share their name with their parents & they wanted to do something special for daddy.
I think it is a very personal choice & should be very carefully be decided. I dont like the idea of changing your name by deed poll i feel very strongly that our parents give us our names for a reason & much as i hate my name, i am respectful of my mother enough to know that she chose my name for a reason & so i would never change it. however i stand by anyone one who feels differently. it is a personal choice & should be respected as such.
Find out who you are & do it on purpose!

I don't see anythign wrong with it and it is a personal choice just as it is for a woman to not change her name. Personally I can't wait to become mrs Thomson rather than Miss Little :)

I'll be taking H2Bs name, but I did ask him about this today and he said he definitely wouldn't take mine!! I like the idea though - each to their own :)
CommentAuthorGlitterfairy
If they want to do it then so be it. It could be a case of the male having more family who could pass down the family name, it could stop at the female as well so it's a way of keeping the family name going.
I changed mine to hubby's and I have changed everywhere. That is what everyone knows me as, dont' think he would have been happy me keeping my name as it was my ex's as I kept his after divorce.

I feel bad as we are both the last line in our families and only have sisters so everyone keeps going on about how we can change that and carry on the family name. What annoys me is that everyone keeps putting pressure on us yet if I was marrying a guy there would be no question that I'd change my name, grrr!!

Part of the reason I seriously thought about keeping my name or double barrelling was because I only have a sister. She changed her name when she got married so there's no one to carry on the family name.
Hubby was so against it though. I like my maiden name, hence why I'll always use it for work purposes.

Can't wait to take my H2B name, I have always hated my surname and it's association with my dad, At the same time I never thought I would ever get married, I will be 43 when I get married for the 1st time. I was with my previous partner for 24 years before his death 3 years ago. Have known my new partner for about 9 maybe 10 years and have now been together 20 months, Also his surname is unusual so will be lovely to take on x
