Your wedding dress is easily the most important gown you’ll ever choose, so it’s important to ensure that the outfit is not only stunning on a hanger, but practical for your big day and truly becoming.

Let’s start with the basics; the most usual way of buying a wedding dress is to use a bridal shop, which tends to be independent (though perhaps favours one or two brands in particular). Once you’ve chosen your perfect gown after many hours of shopping around, a deposit of half of the dress’s cost is usual, as is a twelve-week lead time before the dress is despatched for your first fitting.

Of course, the golden rule when wedding dress shopping is to visit as many shops as possible and
spend as long as possible ensuring that you evaluate not just the dresses themselves, but the service and concern shown by the proprietors.

It’s not uncommon to spend two or three hours in a bridal shop, and you don’t want your alterations, or service to seem rushed, so opting for a dress retailer who will take their time and ensure everything is just so, is absolutely essential.

Likewise, shop around but don’t economise too much – a company which offers lower prices may economise on their attentiveness and service which simply won’t do for the most important item of clothing you’ll ever wear, with several fittings of your dress being a necessity, choosing a bridal shop far away may prove a false economy if you’re inconvenienced by frequently travelling for fittings,
or to approve alterations.

Naturally bridal magazines and the internet are both valuable resources for ideas. Needless to say styles of dresses these days vary enormously, so having an idea of what you’re seeking in advance could prove extremely wise indeed.

Above all, wedding dress shopping can be tiring and stressful, but it shouldn’t be, and by taking your time, enjoying the experience and by not feeling rushed or pressured you can make it a far more bearable experience – after all, no bride has ever found herself unable to locate that perfect gown for her wonderful day; your perfect ‘must have’ wedding dress is out there, and rest assured, you will find it!
