Upon deciding where you will marry, you will need to begin the legal proceedings by informing your local Register Office of your intention and freedom to marry. We advise making an appointment with your local register office for more details.

You will then have to wait at least 16 days to marry whereupon your local Superintendent Registrar will then issue an Authority to Marry. During your wedding day, you will need a minimum of two adults to witness your marriage, and if you’re to marry in a local register office, do check its capacity to see how many attendees can witness your wedding. Couples can usually personalise their vows but no religious content is permitted in a civil ceremony.

If you choose to marry in a register office, the office in question will ask you to provide your passport, your birth certificate and  evidence of the address at which you reside such as a utility bill or driving licence. If you have been married previously, you will also need your decree absolute bearing the stamp used by courts in the UK, or your original divorce documents with the court stamp of if issued out of the UK. If you are widowed, you will require the death certificate of your late husband/wife. If you have changed your name, you should also include your deed poll and if you’re under the age of 18, you will also require the written consent of your parent(s) and guardian(s).
