News of a royal wedding grips the nation and puts an end to months of speculation as officials at Clarence House announce that Prince William and Kate Middleton are engaged to be married and plan to wed in London next Spring or Summer...
Middleton mayhem has consumed the nation this morning as the news that Prince William and girlfriend of eight years Kate Middleton are to marry.
After years of 'will-they, won't-they' speculation, rumours have finally been laid to rest as an official statement was released confirming the pair's engagement. The royal couple are due to marry in Spring or Summer of 2011 in London.
The last royal wedding of this scale — the marriage of Prince Charles and Lady Diana Spencer almost 30 years ago — saw thousands of enthusiastic Britons, including current Prime Minister David Cameron, camp out overnight in a bid to witness the monumental event for themselves.
Having received the news yesterday, The Prime Minister said: "A great day for our country, a great day for the Royal family and obviously a great day for Prince William and for Kate."
William sealed the engagement with his late mother’s spectacularly sparkling sapphire and diamond engagement ring. "This was my way of making sure that my mother didn't miss out on today," the Prince said.
Although the nation knows her as Kate, Miss Middleton will be named Queen Catherine if William — as anticipated — takes the British throne in the future.
