Designer Wedding Dresses at Ellis Bridals

Written by Rachel Hollis on 20th July 2011

Since their launch in 1912, top London bridal designer, Ellis Bridals, have enjoyed an esteemed reputation at the forefront of wedding dress design. Here, we talk to the team behind this famed family firm, and discover what current cutting-edge creations are big with British brides...

With a wealth of experience in the industry — Ellis are set to celebrate their 100th anniversary next year — who better to answer our burning questions about the wedding world's top trends?

Having blossomed from its East End origins, the brand has grown from strength to strength, and its designs are now stocked in over 250 independent bridal boutiques across the world.

The brains behind the brand come in the form of a talented team of designers, who have an unparalleled understanding of fabrics, embellishment, and design. It is to this working knowledge that the label owes its continued success.

Suited to the quintessentially British bride, Ellis gowns are entirely designed and handcrafted in London, and the brand pride themselves on their re-invention of the traditional made-to-measure wedding dress.

Regine Ellis — managing director of the family run business — says she is inspired by the ever-changing bridal market, and is happy to embrace a fusion of traditional tailoring and contemporary couture.

What design features do you strive to preserve throughout your collections?

"Our latest collection — 'London 2011' — took inspiration from the traditional hand craftmanship and tailoring that this design house has built its reputation upon," says managing director, Regine.

"Our hand-made detailing, fine draping and beautiful fabrics are crucial to our continued success," she adds.

What's 'big' this season?

"This season, silhouettes are bold and striking with full billowing skirts," say the Ellis designers.

"A large proportion of this season's gowns are pleated at the waist to shape and define the bride's natural shape."

And what about colour?

"This season's colours are kept simple with soft ivories, whites and blues," say the team.

And finally — how have the season's trends been incorporated into your mid-season 'London 2011' collection?

"This collection is chic with a classic twist, and fabrics have been mixed up to create unique and modern combinations."
