In addition to all the joys of your special day and the many sacred memories that go with your dream wedding, it’s also a wonderful opportunity to increase your toaster collection, assuming of course, you don’t take steps to limit the number of superfluous appliances by way of a properly constructed wedding list!

It’s natural that friends and relatives want to spoil the happy couple with generous and beautiful gifts, but it’s so much more difficult to do so nowadays since the whole culture of wedding present shopping has changed considerably in modern times.

In previous years, co-habitation was rare and couples preferred to go from living at home to living together as man and wife. Today, however, many couples live together before marrying and therefore probably have all the household essentials already. Likewise, those who have spent time away at university or have shared living-space with friends before marrying probably have all they need for their household too.

Most modern high street stores manage their own gift lists or have dedicated internet sites where you can compile a list and prevent duplicate gifts – after all there’s nothing worse than having to take back several toasters and explain to your nearest and dearest why precisely you’re not burning your bread with the fruits of their generosity.

For alternative ideas for the couple who have all they need and don’t care to ask for equipment for plenty of DIY work, there are numerous other gifts you could ask for which are experiential rather than material – from romantic dinners for two, to weekend breaks, paragliding or a champagne toasted hot air balloon ride.

Alternatively, you could ask for a case of champagne with which to toast your new life, or from less familiar guests, newspapers, the number one album and other time specific keepsakes from your wedding day to remind yourself what life was like ‘back then’!
